Lifting large or heavy items can be difficult without the correct equipment, but there are cranes available from rental companies that can make these lifts more manageable. Crane rentals typically include the crane, the operator, and potentially a rigger if needed. Still, you will need to discuss the lift with the crane company to get the perfect combination for your needs.

Determining Your Needs

Cranes are commonly used for lifting in construction situations but can also be used to move something heavy that needs to come off a truck and get set into place. A large sign, a statue, or some stones used in landscaping could all require a crane to move, so determining the size of the crane needed starts with the load it needs to move.

Large cranes often have more height to them, so if you are lifting a rooftop HVAC unit, the job may require a larger machine than if you are taking a large stone off a truck and setting it on the ground. The crane rental company will assess the need by the height of the lift, the reach required, and the weight of the object they are moving. Once they have all the information, the rental company will provide the correct machine so the lift can be performed safely.

Crane Access

Even small cranes are typically heavy and require space to set up in. Making space for the crane on your site or location is crucial, and the crane operator will make the final decision about setting up and lifting the object you need to be moved. If the operator can not safely navigate the site or the ground will not support the machine, the operator may abort the lift.

Having the crane rental company do a site assessment is an excellent way to avoid a problem and ensure that you can get the assistance you need to move the oversized load. If the site has some challenges, having the crane rental company check it for you allows you to correct the issues and ensure that the crane operator can make it lift when the time comes.

When the crane arrives on the site, let the operator take over the lift and call the shots. The operator is responsible for the load once it leaves the ground or the truck it is on until it is in place, so work with them to ensure that the lift goes smoothly and successfully. If a rigger comes with the operator, all the crane rigging duties should be directed by them. The rigger specializes in creating stable loads for the operator to move, protecting the load, the people on the site, the crane, and the operator in the process.
